Strategy. Under normal circumstances, the portfolios sub-adviser, Madison Asset Management, LLC (the sub-adviser), seeks to achieve the portfolios investment objective by investing its assets primarily in a broad mix of securities including bonds, U.S. stocks, foreign stocks, and money market instruments. Bonds, stock and cash components of the portfolio will vary, reflecting the sub-advisers judgment of the relative availability of attractively yielding and priced stocks and bonds. Under normal market conditions, the balance between the two strategies of the portfolio, i.e. , fixed-income investing and equity investing, is generally targeted at 60% of net assets in fixed-income and 40% of net assets in equity, but is ultimately determined by the sub-adviser after reviewing the risks associated with each type of investment, with the goal of meaningful risk reduction as market conditions demand. Bonds (including investment grade and mortgage- or asset-backed) may constitute up to 100% of the portfolios net assets. Fixed-income securities are chosen by the sub-adviser based on the evaluation of the issuer, industry, market sector and maturity relative to overall portfolio structure. Stocks (including common, preferred and convertible bonds) may constitute up to 42% of the portfolios net assets. The portfolio does not intend to hold real estate or high yield securities. Equity securities are chosen by the sub-adviser based on the size and growth potential of their dividends. The portfolio may also, but is not required to, invest in exchange traded funds (ETFs) that are registered investment companies and may also, but is not required to, write (sell) covered call options, up to 5% of its net assets when deemed appropriate by the sub-adviser, in an effort to generate additional income through the collection of option premiums. The portfolio may invest in privately issued securities, including those that are normally purchased pursuant to Rule 144A or Regulation S promulgated under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended.
